Fire Prevention!!!
Clean House:
Don't let old papers and trash gather in closets, attics, basements, garages or under your basement stairs. If they should ignite flames could grow and spread rapidly. Throw rubbish and unused items out reguarlly.
Have Family Exit Drills
Plan in advance what escape routes you'll use and designate a meeting space outside your home. Have an alternate plan in place in case flames block your escape. Make sure you instruct baby sitters on what to do in case of a fire.
Install Smoke Detectors
In each occupied floor - including the basement, and within 15 feet of each sleeping room, which is the law in some states. Check the batteries in your detectors at least once a month and change the batteries at least twice a year.
Don't Hide Extension Cords
Extension cords should be in good condition and out in the open rather than under rugs, over hooks or through door openings or partitions. Pay particular attention to using the right size or thickness cord for the load being powered.
The New Hyde Park Fire Department has been recoginzed as the fastest volunteer Fire Department on Long Island with a response time of 3.5 minutes on average. However, taking a little time to look at potential hazards in your home can go a long way towards fighting fires before they start.
